Cooling system or Radiator Flush

Motorsport is our passion too

Here at ICE racing, we are as passionate about motorsport as you are. The thrill of motorsport is what drives us, and the thrill of winning is what we live for.

The correct procedure to flushing your cooling system is commonly over looked. You can either follow this procedure at home, or have your cooling system professionally flushed by the friendly team at Hi Tech Radiators.

If you are fitting a set of ICE Racing Radiators, you must have your cooling system professionally flushed and then have your new radiators fitted by a professional mechanic or radiator technician in order to qualify for the 12 month factory warranty.

Below is simply a guide on how to self maintain your cooling system to ensure your machine is performing at its’ absolute best.

What do I need?

In order to carry out this procedure, you will need a few things

1. Suitable tools for loosening radiator/water pump drain (most motorcycles use 8/10mm socket. For cars, see owners manual)
2. Container to catch old coolant
3. Good quality radiator coolant flush (click here)
4. Water for flushing (hose)
5. New coolant for refilling. For motorcycles and performance motors use Red or Orange coolant (green is not suitable).

Procedure

Please note: Coolant is toxic to the environment, and must be disposed of responsibly. Please take it to your nearest radiator shop and ask them to dispose for you, or to a chemicals disposal centre.

1. Ensure your engine and radiator is cold and your cabin heater (if applicable) is switch to the hottest position
2. Open radiator drain plug and drain out as much coolant as possible. You need to measure how much comes out, or check user manual for cooling system capacity
3. Drain coolant overflow tank (if applicable) and rinse with water until clean
4. Replace drain plug and tighten
5. Fill radiator with fresh water and replace radiator cap. at this stage you want to run your engine until the normal running temperature is achieved.
6. Wait until your engine has cooled down and Repeat step 2
7. You need to repeat steps 1-6 at least 2 times (recommended 3)
8. Now you can go ahead and use the radiator coolant flush to get rid of any other unwanted deposits. Follow directions on the bottle.
9. Once you have completely finished the flushing process, you can now fit your new ICE Racing Radiator and refill your radiator with fresh coolant. Be very careful with choosing the correct coolant for your application, and absolutely do not mix different brands of coolants. This could result in rapid internal engine and radiator corrosion. Feel free to call us anytime for advice on the correct coolant for your applciation.

Refilling your cooling system

Once you have the correct coolant, follow the user manual for your machine on refilling coolant.

If you don’t have a user manual
1.Simply undo any air bleeds in the cooling system and refill with coolant. If using 50/50 mix coolant/water then you need only to fill half the cooling system. Continue to fill the cooling system until the coolant comes out of the air bleeds.
2.Tighten the air bleeds and add more coolant if necessary.
3. Fill overflow tank to the appropriate level.
4. Ensure any bolts, hoses and drains are all tightened.
5. Now, run the engine up to operating temp and then switch off engine and allow to cool down. Check your radiator coolant level again and check your overflow tank coolant level. Add more coolant if necessary.

That’s it! Now you can get back on the track/road and be confident that your cooling system is clean.
